Discover SE3 Cardio Displays
CREATING THE FIRST PATENTED DIGITAL INTERFACE ON CARDIO EQUIPMENT AT LIFE FITNESS
TEAM LEAD / UX and UI designer / PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Inception to Sustaining Growth; Including Scaling Platforms
Project Background:
The original Discover Series console was launched in 2012. Like most software, it was soon time for an update to cater to growing consumer expectations. With three primary goals in mind – encourage discoverability with a one tap away concept, drive entertainment and further customization capabilities – the Discover SE3 and Discover SE3 HD consoles were born.
Process:
Six months after the project inception, Life Fitness terminated the agency contract and recruited me to design and build a team of designers to create what became the new interface for cardio equipment. With a challenge ahead and time lost, I rolled up my sleeves and challenged the concept. We needed to simplify in navigation, unlike the competition, and visual design beginning first with discovering what is critical to the user. This ultimately allowed us to expose all the entertainment options and paved the way for the one tap away concept. We re-engineered and expedited the workout setup process to allow exercisers to get into their workout faster. The new design has been flexible enough to sustain two years of additional development, feature adds, scaling android and most critically – quickly responding to user feedback and market demand.
Results:
By design and validated by analytics, usage rates on feature engagement including log in, entertainment apps and alternative workout options have increased by exercisers when compared to the previous console series. Fostering a deeper connection to exerciser trends and desires to track workouts and gather more data, the Discover SE3 console digital product design positions these options and the Apple GymKit integration at the forefront of the experience, further enabling the quantified self.
Adapting to the Market:
Discover SE3 and its family of products have supported the evolving market and training trends with its flexible design through the power of connected IoT product. Using halo.fitness, the most recent cardio display product iteration allows gyms to host HIIT (high intensity interval training) classes and support training trends as well as traditional workouts without having to purchase additional equipment.
